Abstract

1402659 Polyurethane coating compositions BAYER AG 30 May 1973 [30 May 1972 1 Feb 1973] 49987/74 Divided out of 1402658 Heading C3R In a process for lacquering metal bands and coils the binder for the lacquer comprises a reactive mixture having a viscosity of 30 to 600 seconds measured in a no. 4 DIN cup, containing (a) at least one organic polyisocyanate having aliphatic iso-cyanate groups, (b) at least one polyhydroxyl compound with a molecular weight between 200 and 2000, the hydroxyl groups being aliphatically bound and (c) 0 to 50% by weight of the total weight of (b) and (a) of a monohydric and/or polyhydric alcohol with a molecular weight below 200, the NCO/OH ratio in the mixture being between 0À8 :1 1 and 1À2 : 1. The mixture is coated on metal coils and bands and hardened by heating at 220‹ to 550‹ C. In examples the polyisocyanates (a) are a tris-(isocyanatohexyl)-biuret and an isocyanurate/uretdione mixture prepared by oligomerization of hexamethylene diisocyanate; the polyhydroxyl compounds (b) are hydroxylcontaining polyesters prepared from phthalic acid, trimethylolpropane, adipic acid, stearic acid, castor oil, cyclohexanone/formaldehyde resin, hexane triol, butane diol and hexahydrophthalic acid, and hydroxyl-containing polyethers obtained by propoxylating trimethylol propane, 1,2-propane diol and ethylene diamine: the monohydric and polyhydric alcohols (c) are diethylene glycol, ethanol, phenoxypropanol, pentanol, butanol, triethyleneglycol, dipropylene glycol and trimethylol propane; other ingredients include zeolite powder, castor oil, titanium dioxide, sodium alumosilicate powder, triethylorthoformate, cyclohexanone, methoxy butyl acetate, dyes and pigments; the lacquers are applied to steel bands and aluminium coils and cured by heating.
