Abstract

1402582 Flame-proofing materials CIBAGEIGY AG 5 Sept 1972 [14 Jan 1972] 41102/ 72 Heading DIP [Also in Division C3] Materials especiallly fabrics are flameproofed with condensation products obtained by condensing 1 mol of a tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)-phosphonium compound with 0.02 to 1 mol of a compound of formula or its salt, where R is hydrogen, hydroxyl or an optionally substituted aliphatic, cycloalipha'tic, aromatic or heterocyclic radical, at 40‹ to 120‹C, optionally with formaldehyde or a formaldehyde-releasing agent and optionally in an inert organic solvent. The condensation may have been continued at 100‹ to 150‹C and free hydroxyl groups may have been etherified. The fabrics are flameproofed by applying to them aqueous compositions containing the condensation products together with polyfunctional epoxides or polyfunctional nitrogen compounds. In examples te'trakis-(hydroxymethyl)- phosphonium chloride and hydroxide are condensed with hydrochloric acid salts of compounds of the above formula where R is hydrogen and where R is methyl: in one instance formaldehyde is present and in another the product is etherified with methanol: aqueous compositions containing the condensation products together with dimethylolmelamine as a polyfunctional nitrogen compound, are applied to fabrics of polyester mixed with cotton, and of wool and cotton, the fabrics then being dried and heated, heated while moist and partially dried and then contacted with ammonia, to cure the condensation products.
