Abstract
1402559 Polyamide-imide yarns RHONEPOULENC TEXTILE 10 Aug 1972 [12 Aug 1971] 37455/72 Heading C3R [Also in Division B5] A process for producing a lustrous, heat-stable, non-inflammable yarn comprises wet spinning a solution in a polar organic solvent of a copolymer of inherent viscosity 0À7 to 1À5 (0À5 g/100 ml in N-methyl pyrrolidone at 25 C.) and containing at least 0À5 m.equiv. free COOH/g. dry polymer, that can be obtained by reacting at below 80 C.; (a) a solution of a polyamide-imide in the polar solvent with (b) a solution in the same solvent plus up to 3 wt. per cent water of 15 to 50% by wt. of (a) of a polyimide precursor containing both carboxyl and isocyanate groups, or the starting materials for such precursor, using as the coagulating bath a mixture of a solvent and a non-solvent for the copolymer, and stretching the resulting yarn in air at ambient temperature. It is indicated that the water in (b) is responsible for the presence of the necessary free COOH groups and that (b) needs to be reacted with (a) within 24 hours of preparation or it may not contain sufficient free isocyanate. Several suitable reactants and solvents are specified, (a) being prepared by reacting an aromatic diisocyanate with a tricarboxylic acid anhydride an and optionally an aromatic dicarboxylic acid and (b) by reacting a n , preferably the same, aromatic diisocyanate with a tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride in solution in a solvent containing the specified amount of water. Uses.-The yarns are stated to be useful for protective clothing, conveyer belts and filter material for hot gases. Reference is made to Specifications 1,217,041 and 1,009,956.
