Abstract

1402345 Treating waste liquids L S LOVE 14 July 1972 [16 July 1971] 33040/72 Heading C1C [Also in Division B1] A tank for treating waste liquids (Fig. 8 being one embodiment thereof) comprises at least one compartment 18 in which the liquid is circulated by centrally mounted agitator 26 (e.g. aerator) and aerated and/or treated with chemicals (e.g. lime), separated from at least one clarifying compartment 34 by baffles 46, 48 which allow flow of liquid from compartment(s) 18 to compartment(s) 34 and return of settled sludge from compartment(s) 34 to compartment(s) 18, sludge scraper(s) 66 and scum skimmer(s) 114. The flow of liquid to the compartment(s) 34 is controlled by flaps (not shown) pivotably mounted on plate(s) 48 or by adjustable plates (not shown) mounted on plate(s) 46. In Fig. 8 each scraper 66 consists of a pair of overlapping scraper blades and is connected to structure 72, the vertical elements of which are pivotably mounted on a rod extending between a pair of endless chains so that the scraper can be reciprocated along the bottom of the compartment 34 and can be moved from an inoperative position to an operative position at one end of its travel and vice versa at the other end of its travel. Each skimmer 114 consists of two plates one of which is pivotably connected to structure 72. In other embodiments the tank may comprise a central aeration compartment with an annular clarifying compartment; an aeration compartment with one or three clarifying compartments; or two aeration compartments with a clarifying compartment having a V-shaped or inverted V-shaped bottom, positioned therebetween. The baffles 46 may be angled or curved. The clarifying compartments may be constructed of a number of units and may comprise a plurality of settling tubes or baffles. An example discloses treating sewage in a plant comprising primary clarifiers, one or more tanks as described above, sludge digester and chlorinecontacting unit.
