Abstract
1402230 Impact testing W FEY [trading as WILHELM FEY MACHINEN-UND APPARATE BAU] 28 Dec 1973 [19 July 1973] 60082/73 Heading G1S A machine for impact testing of ballast or road-metal comprises a frame 2, a vertical guideway 8 mounted for vertical movement in the frame 2, a monkey 9 sliding in the guideway 8, a raisable release mechanism 10 for raising the monkey in the guideway, a ram 6 against which the monkey impacts when allowed to fall, a motor 5 mounted on an anvil 3 for containing the test material, and means for centering the ram 6 relative to the guideway 8. The guideway 8 is moved vertically by means of a motor 19 having a pinion engaging a rack 20 on the guideway. At the bottom of the guideway the ram 6 is connected to a plate 7 by means of bolts 25 so as to allow a certain amount of free movement. The centering means comprises a guide cylinder 27 fastened to plate 7, and a guide ring 28 sliding in the cylinder 27 and biased downwardly by compressor springs 29 so that its conical face 31 engages a conical face 30 of the ram 6. In use, motor 19 lowers guideway 8 until a bolt 25 engages a limit switch 32, and the position of guideway 8 relative to ram 6 is maintained constant in this way. The monkey 9 is guided by means of grooves engaging fillets 17 of the guideway, and is raised by means of release mechanism 10 and drive unit 15 until a limit switch 21 is engaged. A test sequence may be carried out under manual or automatic control.
