Abstract
1401958 Bearings NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 24 July 1972 [18 Aug 1971] 38765/71 Heading F2A A thrust bearing for a rotary element 1 journalled in a fixed member 4 comprises a thrust member 11 carried by the rotary element and having an annular surface of revolution 29, which co-operates with a bearing pad 13 anchored to the fixed member and having an annular bearing surface, there being one or more feed holes 16 in the surface of the pad for supplying pressurized fluid to the bearing space between the thrust faces, the thrust member being surrounded by a chamber 24 into which fluid escapes from the bearing space and from which fluid may flow through a resistor 26 so that a pressure is created in the chamber to act on a part of the rotating member in opposition to axial forces arising from the pressure of fluid in the bearing space. The bearing pad may be resiliently mounted 17 on the fixed member, and fluid from the thrust bearing may be bled to the journal bearing 6.
