1401779 Rearview mirrors SOC COMMERCIALE DU COMPTOIR DES INVENTIONS PRATIQUES POUR L'AUTOMOBILE 21 Dec 1972 [27 Dec 1971] 59241/72 Heading B7J A motor vehicle rearview mirror assembly comprises a mirror glass 7, Figs. 2 and 4, mounted by a ball-and-socket joint 4a, 6a and two cables 1, 2 connected to the mirror glass 7 at M, N for adjusting the position of the glass 7 by remote control (such as at a lever 16, Fig. 7, within a vehicle passenger compartment), the mirror glass 7 also being acted on by the resilient force of a cantilever spring 10 at P so that the three points of application M, N and P respectively of cable traction and resilient force form a triangle enclosing the centre O of the ball-andsocket joint. The cables 1, 2 and spring 10 act to press the components of the ball-and-socket joint together i.e. part-spherical projection 6a of sheet metal mirror mount 6 and recess 4a of a sheet metal plate 4 which is secured to lugs 5 of a casing 3a, 3b. Cantilever spring 10 is fixed at its ends to apertured strips 8 and 9 on plate 4 and mount 6, while one end of each cable 1, 2 is secured to mount 6 with its sheath abutting plate 4. The other end of each cable 1, 2 is secured to a respective bracket 24 and 25, Fig. 7, of a plate 23 which has a tapped hole receiving a screwthreaded extension 19 of a ball 18 of the lever 16. The lever 16 can be manually adjusted at knob 17 so that ball 18 rotates in a socket portion of a plate 20. This plate 20 closes a casing 22 which has an aperture 26 through which one bracket 25 protrudes, and the plate 20 has holes 21 for securing the plate to an inner wall of a vehicle. When the position of mirror glass 7 has been adjusted at lever 16, the lever can be screwed tightly into the tapped hole of plate 23 so as to prevent inadvertent movement of the assembly by locking ball 18 against its socket portion.
