Variable-speed and reversing gearing, of the kind in which speed changes are effected by movements of toothed wheels in their own planes, is operated by cam-carrying slides 24, 25, Fig. 5, moving parallel to the transmission shafts. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, a countershaft 4 carries gears 9, 10, 11 fixed to it in the same plane respectively as a gear 5 on a driving-shaft 1 and gears 7, 8 on an alined driven shaft 2. The countershaft gears are always in mesh with idlers such as 15, Fig. 2, carried in spiders 12, 13, 14 pivoting about the countershaft so as to bring the idler into mesh with the other gear. Side disks 21 of the size of the pitch-circles facilitate proper working of the gearing. A direct drive between the shafts 1, 2 is effected by a broad independent pinion 16, Fig. 2, brought into mesh with the gear 5 and with a similar gear 6 beside it fast upon the shaft 2. Reversed driving is effected through two intermeshing idlers on an extra arm on the spider 14. Each spider is attached to an arcshaped rocking plate 35, Fig. 2, and each plate has a lug 35' Fig. 5, engaging in cam-grooves 27, 28, 29 in the plates 24, 25. The plates are slid parallel to the shafts by a selecting and operating lever 26 working in a gate. The driving and driven shafts may be parallel, and the invention is applicable to motor-vehicles.
