Abstract

1401011 Pile fabrics A F STODDARD & CO LTD 22 Aug 1972 [1 Sept 1971 14 July 1972] 40839/71 and 32975/72 Heading D1K Patterned pile fabrics are produced by pulling yarn from a supply, cutting a length from the supply to form a tuft, bending the tufts to form a U-shape and glueing the base of the U to a backing sheet. A gripper device 40 pulls tufts from successively presented spools 16 and then rotates through 90‹, and in doing so, bends the tufts against a cam surface 75 to the U-formation, and then pushes the bent tuft against the backing 2, which has been previously coated with adhesive. A tuft rake 76, Figs. 6 and 7, is actuated to cover and protect the previously deposited tufts while the next row is being applied. The gripper device 40 is pivotable on a shaft 48 which is movable vertically by a cam 70 to pull tufts out from the spools, and horizontally by a pneumatic cylinder 68 to deposit the tufts on the backing after rotation of the gripper device. The spool from which tufts are being withdrawn is locked in position by an arm or arms 30 having a notch 29 which is raised to engage a projection 28 on the spool yarn guide. The gripping device 40 has two gripper bars (41, 42) Fig. 2 (not shown) extending across the width of the machine, and one of which (41) about which the tufts are bent into the U-shape, extends further from the gripper axis (45) than the other (42) to prevent bar (42) touching the adhesive on the backing. The adhesive is cured by heaters 10. The tufts may be bonded to the backing by ultra-sonic welding, in which case gripper bar 41 acts as an electrode. The backing sheet 2 may be hessian. A Jacquard device may provide for programmed selection of desired colours to make the pattern.
