Abstract

1400614 Measuring speed; angular position electrically REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT and AUTOMOBILES PEUGEOT 13 June 1972 [14 June 1971 25 Feb 1972] 27632/72 Heading G1N The angular speed and instantaneous position of an I.C. engine are determined by generating two pulse trains corresponding to the passage of flywheel teeth past a sensor 3 and boss teeth 5 past sensors 4 respectively and comparing one of the pulse trains with a reference frequency. The engine position is determined from the number of flywheel pulses (each corresponding to 360‹/n of rotation with n flywheel teeth) after a boss pulse which defines a datum position. The pulse trains are shaped at 6 and compared in counter 8 with a clock generated reference frequency 7. The comparison may be made either by counting reference pulses during one flywheel or boss pulse period (reference # maximum tooth pulse frequency) or by counting flywheel or boss pulses in one reference period (reference # minimum boss pulse frequency). The measured values may be fed to a computer for ignition and fuel injection control. The flywheel may have q sensors each spaced by distances of p + 1/q tooth spacings (p=integer) the pulse trains being combined to give a resolution of 360‹/nq Each tooth sensor preferably comprises a high frequency signal generator inductively coupled with the flywheel teeth so that the generator is inhibited during the passage of a tooth. The resulting signals are converted to a pulse train using a monostable multi-vibrator, the astable period of which is greater than the period of the oscillations.
