Abstract

1400552 Automatic control of temperature LOMOND CONTROLS Ltd 10 April 1973 [6 April 1972] 15799/72 Heading G3R [Also in Divisions B5 and F4] An oven for heating thermoplastic material, especially for drawing polypropylene tape, comprises a housing having at least two radiant heating elements arranged opposite each other to define a heat treatment region therebetween at least two reflectors arranged to reflect heat radiated from said heating elements into said heat treatment region an inlet and an outlet opening in said housing to allow the continuous passage of the thermoplastic material through the said heat treatment region, and temperature control means for automatically maintaining said heating elements at black heat, preferably operating at a temperature to emit radiant heat energy at a wavelength of 3800-4200Š. The temperature control system comprises a temperature sensor e.g. a thermocouple, located adjacent associated heating elements, a potentiometric controller connected to said sensor and a silicon controlled rectifier means connected to the output of the said controller preferably two or more silicon controlled rectifiers, each rectifier being associated with a set of associated heaters on respective sides of the path of the plastic material), and arranged to supply power to said associated heating elements in response to signals from said controller.
