Abstract

1400410 Fillers ENGLISH CLAYS LOVERING POCHIN & CO Ltd 16 June 1972 [24 June 1971] 29678/71 Headings C1A and C1N [Also in Division D2] A filler is prepared by (a) grinding in a dry state a filler rock, partly-prepared filler powder or filler particles with at least one watersoluble compound which is capable of coating the filler particles and of being coagulated by a precipitant to form a substantially waterinsoluble and coherent coating on the filler particles, the compound being in a dry state or in solution, grinding being carried out in a mill which is hot-air swept, and (b) collecting the intimately mixed compound and filler in a dry state. The term " dry state " is defined as the presence of insufficient solvent to result in appreciable coherence of particles. " In solution ", as applied to the compound capable of coating the filler particles is defined as solutions sufficiently concentrated such that no appreciable coherence of particles results in the grinding step. Specified coating compounds are starch, casein, polyvinyl alcohol, sodium alginate, gelatine and mixtures thereof. The filler may be calcium carbonate, china clay, titanium dioxide or calcium sulphite.
