Abstract

1400286 Coated products CIBA-GEIGY AG 24 Aug 1972 [3 Sept 1971] 39371/72 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Cured polyester-polyacrylate coatings are obtained by coating on a substrate and then irradiating with ionising radiation a compound of the formula: wherein R 1 , R 3 and R' 3 each independently represent H or methyl, A is a divalent or trivalent organic radical such that the compound of formula: is a di- or tri-glycidyl compound in which R 2 and R 2 ' represent H, or is a cycloaliphatic di- or tri-epoxide in which R 2 and/or R' 2 is linked to A and R 2 or R' 2 if not so linked represents H, B represents a polyester radical in which branched or unbranched alkylene and/or alkenylene chains alternate with carboxylic acid ester groups, the quotient Z/Q (where Z is the number of carbon atoms present in the recurring structural unit of B, and Q is the number of carboxylic acid ester linkages present in said recurring unit) is at least 3, the total number of carbon atoms present in B is at least 8, and n is 1 or 2. The above compound may optionally be mixed with a copolymerisable compound such as an ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, styrene, divinyl benzene, a vinyl ester or an allyl compound, e.g. diallyl phthalate. The curable coatings may also include a plasticiser, filler or pigment. Coatings may be produced on metal, wood, plastics, glass, paper or leather. Suitable forms of ionising radiation for effecting curing include X-rays, gamma rays and accelerated electrons. The curable material can advantageously be subjected to a heattreatment before, during or after curing. If desired a free radical catalyst, e.g. a peroxide, azo compound or persulphate, may be added to the curable material. In Examples coatings are formed on electrolytically pretreated iron sheet, galvanised steel sheet, hardwood-fibre sheets and ABS plastics sheets.
