As shown, in Fig. 2, two radial tongues 4, 5 are cut from a disc 1, made, e.g. of cardboard the tongues, which have their roots on a circle of a diameter equal to that of the hollow core 12 of the coil, being bent out about the lines 6 and pushed into the core 12 to cover the respective rough end of the coil 7. The resilient recovery factor of the tongues 4, 5 keeps the discs firmly in position on the ends of the coil. The tongues may have additional folds to aid their gripping within the core 12. Instead of gripping within the core 12 the tongues may engage between consecutive layers of the coil mesh. A disc, Fig. 5, has tongues which are formed by arcuate cuts 14, 15 of a diameter equal to the core diameter 12 and a diametral cut 16, and which are adapted to engage within the coil core 12. In an alternative arrangement the tongues extend diametrically from the outer edge of the disc and, when bent over, are adapted to be introduced between meshes adjacent the external surface of the coil. The disc, which may be formed of plastics, need not be flat but may be formed to fit the shape of the coil end. The discs can be fitted while the coils are being conveyed to a packing machine where the coils are wrapped in heat-shrinkable plastics material, and heated.
