Abstract
1400162 Flame retardant compositions NATIONAL DISTILLERS & CHEMICAL CORP 14 June 1972 [14 June 1971 1 June 1972] 27902/72 Heading C3P Flame retardant compositions comprise (1) a polymeric component of which at least 66 weight per cent is crosslinked or uncrosslinked ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, (2) a silane and (3) a hydrated inorganic filler containing chemically bound water of hydration which is released on application of heat sufficient to cause combustion or ignition of the copolymer. The ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer may be crosslinked by radiation or with peroxide crosslinking agents, optionally with assistants such as triallyl cyanurate, and the polymeric component may also contain polyethylene, copolymers of ethylene with higher olefins, acrylates or maleates, vinyl acetate/acrylate copolymers, or polydimethyl- or polymethylphenyl siloxanes. The silane may be an alkoxysilane, preferably a vinyl- or methacryloxypropyl alkoxysilane. The filler may be hydrated alumina, hydrated magnesia or hydrated calcium silicate. The compositions may also contain stabilizers, pigments and lubricants, e.g. calcium and aluminium fatty acid soaps and silicone oils, and may be extruded on to conductors as insulation. Examples describe compositions comprising ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, hydrated alumina, calcium stearate, polymerized trimethyl dihydroquinoline and bis - (t.butylperoxyisopropyl)benzene and (1,2,3 and 8) vinyl tris-(#-methoxyethoxy)silane or (13) γ-aminopropyl triethoxysilane.
