Abstract

1400058 Blasting R T NELSON 26 Sept 1972 [28 Feb 1972] 44347/72 Heading B3D Apparatus for the treatment of a vertical surface 62 comprises an enclosure 12 in the form of a housing having an opening 14 in one vertical wall, a projecting means 42 within the enclosure for projecting a stream of particulate abrasive material through the opening, a resilient sealing means 16 around the opening for contacting the surface, a storage means 46 for supplying the abrasive material to the projecting means, and recirculation means 52 for collecting propelled abrasive material from the lower portion of the enclosure and conveying it to an upper portion of the enclosure and delivering it to the storage means. The enclosure is spaced from the surface by castors 18 so that the seal which consists of a single resilient member 16 engages the surface. The seal surrounds the opening which is of elongate shape and through which the abrasive is thrown by a centrifugal throwing wheel 42 driven by a motor in a housing 30. The spent abrasive falls to the bottom of the enclosure and is carried by the scoops or buckets of the belt or chain conveyer 52, which runs over pulleys or sprockets 54 and is driven by a pulley or sprockets 56 driven by a motor 32, to the upper part of the enclosure and is delivered into the storage means 46 from which it is passed through a duct 48 to a funnel 50 leading to the wheel 42. A fan within a housing 22 draws air through a vacuum duct 24 connected to the enclosure so that dust and fine particles produced by the blasting operation are drawn from the enclosure and discharged through an exhaust duet 26. The air is fed to the enclosure and circulated therein by the wheel 42. The apparatus is supported for vertical movement over the surface 62 by cables 72 secured to lugs 74 on the enclosure and passing over pulleys 70 on a support structure 64, the cables then being wound on winches 38 on the apparatus which are driven to raise and lower the apparatus. The structure is movable along a rail 67 at the top of the surface, and the apparatus is movable horizontally by rotation of a pulley 36 which is held in frictional engagement with a cable 78 or chain and driven by a motor 34, the cable being held under tension by means 76 secured to the surface.
