Abstract
1499893 Vehicle wheel rims MICHELIN ET CIE 24 March 1975 [25 March 1974] 12185/75 Heading B7C A moulded vehicle wheel rim includes tension resistant reinforcing means at least partially embedded in the moulded material and positioned alongside the inside surface of at least the corner(s) having the greatest curvature so as to oppose tension stress acting in the corner(s) and transversely of the circumferential direction of the rim. The modulus of elasticity of the reinforcing means is greater than that of the material from which the rim is moulded. As illustrated each corner 15, 16, 17 of the one-piece rim is reinforced by means extending only over a part of the width of the rim whereas in a modified embodiment (Figs. 2 and 4, not shown) the reinforcing means comprises two wires each of which passes repeatedly across the rim and about circumferential wires (29) positioned in the bead retaining flanges. The Specification also discloses a two-part rim having a removable tyre bead retaining flange (Fig. 3, not shown). The rim may be of a light metal alloy or a synthetic resin and the reinforcing means may comprise wires (as indicated above) steel cables, glass fibres or carbon fibres; or meshes; or layers formed from particles, or short lengths, of reinforcing materials dispersed at random in a matrix.
