Abstract
1499408 Microwave amplifiers INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP 30 April 1975 [30 April 1974] 18044/75 Heading H3W A microwave amplification system comprises parallel amplifiers 8, 9, Fig. 1, and input and output couplers 1, 2 whereby in normal operation, the amplifiers work in parallel but if a circuit 15 deduces from measurements made at 10, 11, 12 and 13 that one amplifier is defective, it switches off that amplifier and alters the phase shift introduced at 101, 102, 121, 122 to switch all the power through the working amplifier. The coupling circuits comprise 3 dB hybrid junctions 100, 103 and ferrite phase shifters 101, 102. Normally the paths through 102 and 122 are #/4 longer than those through 101 and 121 so that an input at E is divided into equal parts for amplifiers 8, 9 and equal signals applied to hybrid junction 120 feed an output antenna S. Opposite 45 degree phase shifts are applied to 101 and 102 to direct the whole signal to one amplifier or the other and to 121, 122 to couple the operative amplifier to the antenna. When the amplification system has several stages in series, couplers may be provided between each stage to cut out any defective amplifiers. To minimize the effect of reflections from the antenna, the length from amplifiers 8 and 9 to the input of coupler 12 differs by #/4.
