Abstract

A mass which contains a latex of a flexible polymer and ungelatinised starch grains is spread over the surface of the paper. The average diameter of the starch grains is smaller than the average distance between the surface fibres of the paper. The excess of coating mass is removed and the paper is then dried. The flexible polymers used can be rubbery homopolymers and copolymers. The latices can also contain minor quantities of latices of resinous polymers. The paper coated in this way has improved resistance to dirt, moisture and damage by folding. When printed in the conventional manner, better detail delineation and truer reproduction of hair lines are obtained. The appearance and characteristic rustling of the paper do not change as a result of the coating. It can be used as banknotes paper or securities paper.
