Abstract

1499218 Illuminated switches DAV 23 Oct 1975 [23 Oct 1974] 43515/75 Heading H1N A switch unit for the instrument panel of an automobile comprises an opaque housing 1 containing a number of switches 2, each switch 2 comprising contacts (not shown) on a slider 11 and on a casing 4 together with a transparent methyl methacrylate plastics light transmitter body 26 interposed between a 1 watt red or amber warning light 17 and the translucent or transparent cap 23 of the press-button key 15, the body 26 having a concave recess 21 to accommodate the top of light 17. The housing 1 contains a 3 watt green panel light 32 and has an internal surface of high reflectivity such as white paint. Warning light 17 shows when the switch is on, the body 26 being shaped to concentrate the light on the cap 23, while the cap can be seen by light from 32 when the switch is off. The cap 23 may be detachable and carry a symbol indicating the function of the switch. In an alternative embodiment (not shown) the cap 23 is replaced by the outer surface of body 26 which is then ground or frosted.
