Abstract
1498848 Amine-formaldehyde/PVA fibres TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc 8 May 1975 [21 May 1974] 19340/75 Heading B5B [Also in Division C3] A fire-resistant fibre comprises (A) a condensate of an amino compound and formaldehyde in which at least 50% of the formaldehyde residues are methylene linkages and (B) polyvinyl alcohol in a weight ratio in the range 20 : 80 to 95 : 5. The condensate may be from melamine and/or a guanamine and/or urea. The fibre may wet or dry spun from a solution of (A) and (B) in, e.g. water; N-methylpyrrolidone, dimethylacetamide, hexamethylphosphoramide or dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO), preferably the last, in which solvent t e condensate may have been prepared. The fibre may be further cured by treatment with gaseous or liquid formaldehyde and an acid; the formaldehyde source or the acid may be incorporated into the spinning solution and the other applied after fibrization. In examples condensates are obtained by raaction of an "amine" with approximately equimolar amounts of 37% formalin in DMSO, in the presence of HCl, H 2 SO 4 or H 3 PO 4 , the amine being melamine M or benzoguanamine B or urea U alone, or mixtures thereof-M+G in 1 : 1 or 10 : 1 molar ratio, M + U in 2 : 1 or 1 : 2 molar ratio, or M+G+U in 3 : 1 : 3 molar ratio, and solutions of PVA in DMSO are added to the product solutions; the mixed solutions are coagulated in aqueous sodium sulphate, in methanol, in NaOH/NaCl in water/DMSO or in aqueous ammonium sulphate or acid phosphate, and the fibres obtained are cured by immersion in a solution of formalin, H 2 SO 4 and Na 2 SO 4 in water.
