Abstract

1497658 Magnetic recording media IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 10 March 1975 [29 March 1974 (2)] 5560/75 and 5562/74 Divided out of 1497656 and 1497657 Headings C3P and C3R [Also in Division B2] Magnetic recording media are produced by coating a self-supporting plastic film with an aqueous solution or latex comprising (1) either a polymer or coploymer of acrylic or methacrylic acid or an ester thereof or an unhydrolysed or partially hydrolyzed polymer or copolymer of vinyl acetate, (2) one or more synthetic resins capable of intra-molecular cross-linking, e.g. an epoxy or alkyd resin or an amine/aldehyde condensate, and (3) a magnetically susceptible material. The plastic film may be pre-coated, e.g. with an acrylic polymer or a co-polyester. In examples, a film of polyethylene terephthalate, which in Example 2 is pre-coated with an ethyl acrylate/methyl methacrylate/methacrylamide copolymer cross-linked with a melamine/formaldehyde condensate, is coated with a magnetic composition comprising ferric oxide, vinyl acetate/2-ethylhexyl acrylate copolymer, a melamine/formaldehyde resin, a dispersing agent, a wetting agent, an antifoaming agent, a thickener and water.
