Abstract

1496380 S-Z stranding SIEMENS AG 25 Nov 1975 [6 Dec 1974] 48467/75 Heading D1T An apparatus for S-Z twisting together of a plurality of elements 1, Fig. 1 comprises spaced stationary guide heads 11, 16 defining between them a twisting region, a pair of stranding heads 12, 13 associated with guide head 11 and a pair of stranding heads 14, 15 associated with guide head 16; the arrangement being such that heads 12 and 14 rotate in the same direction and can simultaneously be caused to engage the cable elements and twist them together in one direction; and thereafter, the heads 13 and 15 that jointly rotate in the opposite direction to the heads 12 and 14 can simultaneously be caused to engage the cable and twist it in the opposite direction in the period that the heads 12 and 14 are not in engagement with the elements 1. In Fig. 1 the arrows show how the stranding heads 12, 14 are in engagement with the elements 1 whilst the heads 13, 15 are free therefrom; and in Fig. 2 the arrows show how the heads 13, 15 are in engagement with the elements whilst the heads 12, 14 are free therefrom. The cable thus becomes twisted in opposite directions as it passes through the apparatus. Fig. 3 (not shown) shows a modified embodiment in which there are more than two of the associated pairs of stranding heads between the stationary guide heads 11, 16. In Fig. 4 the stranded material is guided within the twisting section by stationary guideheads 32 to 35. Each of the guideheads 32 to 35 comprises two oppositely positioned rolls having axes which include an acute angle with the stranding axis such that rotational movement imparted to the strand by the stranding heads is not hindered by the guideheads 32 to 35. A guide rail 36 can be used to swing the guideheads 32 to 35 to a different angle of inclination. Fig. 5 shows how the elements 1 can be prestranded by pulleys 40, 41, 42 before the stranded cable passes through the guide head 11. The pulleys 40-42 are rotated in every instance oppositely with respect to the direction of rotation of the particular stranding head 22 or 23 engaging the material e.g. in Fig. 5 opposite to that of the stranding head 22.
