Abstract
1495690 Removing H 2 S TEXACO DEVLOPMENT CORP 29 Nov 1975 49130/75 Heading C1A H 2 S is preferentially removed from a gas mixture containing H 2 S and CO 2 by (a) contacting the gas with an aqueous solution containing HCO<SP>-</SP> 3 in sufficient concentration to prevent solution of CO 2 and (b) oxidizing the dissolved H 2 S to sulphur by reaction with dissolved O 2 in aqueous medium catalysed by transition metal ions. The catalytic oxidation may be carried out simultaneously with the absorption stage (a) or in a separate stage. The oxidation may be effected by bubbling air or O 2 into the solution which contains NiCl 2 or to which NiCl 2 is subsequently added. Alternatively the solution may be sprayed into air. Bicarbonate ions may be provided by dissolving a bicarbonate salt in the aqueous liquid or by reaction of an aqueous carbonate or acid phosphate with CO 2 . This reaction may be effected by passing pure CO 2 into the solution, or by using the CO 2 in the gas mixture to be treated.
