Abstract

1495249 Removing nitrile polymer residues MONSANTO CO 14 May 1976 [16 May 1975] 20079/76 Heading C3P Residues of a polymer having 55-85% by wt. of nitrile monomer units (calculated as acrylonitrile) are removed from processing equipment, e.g. polymerization reactors and reflux condensers, by contacting the equipment with a solvent which is dimethyl formamide, dimethyl acetamide, dimethyl sulphoxide or N - methyl - 2 - pyrrolidone under agitation and at a temperature of 75‹ C. to the b.p. of the solvent for sufficient time to dissolve all the residues, draining the solvent, contacting the equipment with fresh solvent to dissolve the film residue of spent solvent, and draining the solvent and then rinsing the equipment with water at a temperature of 50-200‹ C. until the solvent concentration in the rinsing water is below 1 p.p.m. In the examples reactor vessels which had been used to polymerize acrylonitrile and styrene were washed with dimethyl formamide, cold and hot water successively.
