Abstract

1494358 Test device ISTITUTO SIEROTERAPICO E VACCINOGENO TOSCANO SCLAVO SpA 4 Feb 1975 [15 Feb 1974] 4648/75 Heading G1B [Also in Division C6] A device for effecting microbiological quality control in a laboratory consists essentially of a strip consisting of a support section 18, Fig. 9, for handling the device and a terminal absorbent section 16 separated from the support section and having a surface, thickness and absorption capacity such that it has absorbed a fixed quantity of a suspension of micro-organisms after contact therewith, the suspension thereafter having been dried for storage, handling and use. The absorbent section may be made of filter paper-type cellulose or pulp fibres, glass fibres, asbestos fibres or mixtures of these fibres. The material of the support section is, for example, of cellulose acitate or propionate, celluloid, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, polypropylene, polycarbonate, fibrous material as used for the absorbent section or plasticized cardboard. In the embodiment depicted in Fig. 1 the two sections are separated by a water impermeable barrier 5 formed by distributing a solution of a readily drying polymeric material e.g. polystyrene in trichloroethane, ethyl cellulose in a solvent, or cellulose acetate in acetone, and evaporating the solvent. In Fig. 5 the two sections are supported by two sheets 10 of impermeable plastics film, one on each side. Finally, in the Fig. 7 embodiment, the fibrous absorbent portion 11 and a support portion 13 of polymeric plastics material or plasticized cardboard, are held apart by two adhesive sheets 15 without resort to a water-impermeable filling. The devices measure 30 mm long by 5-6 mm wide and typically absorb 20 Œ 2 micro litres of microbial suspension. A process for their production is described.
