1493744 Solid paint compositions SCM (CANADA) Ltd 15 Dec 1975 [20 Dec 1974 (2)] 51311/75 Headings C3P and C3R Solid paint compositions having a gel strength of 100 to 200 mm. penetration and dimensional stability based on ion bonding and comprising (a) a polymer composition selected from (1) a 25 to 90 weight per cent solution in a non- polar solvent of an ion-bonding resin of molecular weight 1000 to 7000 and containing sufficient carboxylic, sulphonic or phosphonic acid groups to provide an acid number of 20 to 80, (2) a 25 to 90 weight per cent dispersion in a non-polar non-solvent of a polymer of molecular weight 25,000 to 1,000,000 and containing sufficient carboxylic, sulphonic or phosphonic acid groups to provide an acid number of 25 to 60 and (3) a mixture of a 25 to 90 weight per cent suspension in non-polar solvent of a polymer of molecular weight 25,000-1,000,000 which is free from reactive sites and a curable resin solution as in (1) in a weight ratio of polymer to curable resin of 2 : 1 to 8 : 1; (b) as cross-linking agent a metal or ammonium hydroxide, a metal oxide, metal alkoxide, or an organic cation former in 10 to 50 weight per cent solution or suspension in a polar solvent; and (c) optionally up to 5 weight per cent of the total polymer of a metallic drier; the composition containing 100 to 600 mole per cent of cross-linking agent per mole of acid functional groups; may be prepared by forming the polymer solutions or suspensions, mixing therewith pigments, fillers, colorants and metallic driers if present and adding with stirring a C 1-8 aliphatic alcohol solution of the hydroxide or organic cation former. Examples describe solid paints comprising titanium dioxide and calcium carbonate; zirconium, cobalt and manganese driers; and mineral spirits solutions and dispersions of alkyd resins derived from trimethylolethane, pentaerythritol, dehydrated castor oil fatty acids, dimer acids and tung oil, lauryl methacrylate/methacrylic acid copolymers, dicarboxypolybutadiene, vinyl acetate/ethyl acrylate/methacrylic acid copolymers and butyl acrylate/methacrylic acid copolymers, optionally with dispersions of ethyl acrylate/methyl methacrylate copolymer and polymethyl methacrylate, gelled with methanol solutions of sodium hydroxide, and alkyd resins esterified with diethylaminoethanol, gelled with hydrochloric or sulphuric acid. Substrates may be coated with the solid paints by drawing a stick or block thereof over the substrate under light pressure.
