Abstract

1492444 Measuring current ELECTRICITY COUNCIL 3 May 1976 [1 May 1975] 18277/75 Heading G1U To test for leakage current through a high impedance member (e.g. a 'live' working tool for overhead power lines), a point on the member is grounded via two terminals of an apparatus which includes a rectifying circuit between the terminals, an indicator responsive to the rectifier output, and separate source of A.C. connected to the rectifier. The 400 Hz oscillator 27 slowly charges capacitor 16 via rectifying diode 15 as long as switch 20 is open circuit. With no leakage current from the tool resistance 10, after about 10 seconds, Schmidt trigger 18 fires, operating a one-half second monostable 19 which closes switch 20 to discharge the capacitor 16 via diode 26 and current limiting resistor 25, and to connect a 2À5 KHz oscillator 21 to ground, thus turning it on to provide an audible 'bleep' from loudspeaker 24. These 'bleeps' are repeated every 10 seconds unless leakage current from resistance 10 increases the rate of charging of the capacitor 16, when the 'bleeps' occur more often, to provide a warning of excessive leakage current. A change in repetition rate also occurs if any component in the apparatus fails.
