Abstract
1492197 Generating combustion gases under pressure NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 16 Sept 1975 [18 Sept 1974] 37980/75 Heading F1L [Also in Division F4] During the manufacture of a solid fuel gas generator, e.g. for inflating lifeboats or safety bags, heat absorbing granules 36 are poured into a cooling chamber 28 within the gas generator casing 12 and then compacted by applying an evenly distributed compressive load, e.g. using a pestle 62 and hydraulic ram 64. After filling and compression, which may be done in stages, a plate (18), Fig. 1 (not shown) is welded in position , under compression, to close the top of the casing. A spacer may be disposed between plate (18) and granules 36. The latter may be silicon carbide, iron or aluminium, or metal oxides such as alumina or magnesia. The fuel, in the form of pellets of potassium perchlorate mixed with sodium azide, is introduced into combustion chamber 26 through ignitor hole 22. As shown the combustion gases will blow radially through coolant chamber 28 to outlet ports 14, but in a modification Fig. 4 (not shown) they flow axially. The compression of granules 36 improves cooling efficiency.
