Abstract

1491489 Boots, etc.; Lasts E MEIER and A ODERMATT 16 Dec 1974 [14 Dec 1973 31 May 1974] 54219/74 Heading A3B An insole, &c. Figs. 1, 3, 4, 6, 9, is substantially flat underneath in the toe region 31 and the heel, and has a flat portion on top beneath the toes with greater and smaller depressions 33, 34 (Fig. 3) for the ball of the large and ball of the small toes, respectively the top heel supporting surface 35 (Figs. 6, 9) being concave, with a radius of curvature t not greater than 1.5 times the maximum width of the insole, the material 37 at the front of the insole being relatively soft and flexible while the material 38 forming the shank and heel is relatively hard. In the region of the shank and heel (Fig. 4 and section 4, Fig. 1) the edges of the insole curve upwards and the inner side of the insole is thickened, Fig. 7 (not shown), to provide an arch support. The plane t, Fig. 9, of the top surface of the heel is inclined downwards towards the toes by an angle α not greater than 10 degrees, or may be parallel to or inclined backwardly away from the plane of the toe region 31. The soft material 37 may be cork, rubber, foamed material, &c. and the harder material 38 may be plastics, e.g. polyurethane. The soft material 37 may have an upwardly-opening cavity for a pad of plastics-impregnated textiles. The insole may have a top covering 39 of leather, &c. and a bottom covering 40 of leather. plastics, fabric, &c. The shank 38 may incorporate a piece of metal, wood, fibre or a hard rubber bar. The insole may be moulded. A last is described, Figs. 12, 13 having a bottom surface configured to the shape of the top of the insole, for use in the manufacture of the insole. In a modification. Figs. 24. 25, 33. 36 a body 47 of rubber. plastics, &c. has a front pad 49 of thermoplastics foam &c. and a stiffener 50. The insole may be moulded using a mould having the inverted shape of the insole. First the top covering 39 is laid in the mould, and the shank piece or hard rubber but arranged in place. Plastics material is then introduced, e.g. a soft foam plastics in the front region 36 and a harder plastics for the mid-foot and heel regions. Finally the bottom covering 40 is pressed-on and the plastics allowed to harden.
