Abstract

1491068 Cleaning electrodes METROPOLITAN SANITARY DISTRICT OF GREATER CHICAGO 3 June 1975 [14 June 1974] 23977/75 Heading F2N [Also in Division G1] The sensor probes in a water quality monitoring system are cleaned by treating the probes in a water testing container with ultrasonic energy, the water having previously had particulate material removed in a centrifuge. The probes may be glass electrodes for pH measurements or membrane electrodes for measuring dissolved oxygen. In the embodiment shown a stream of water is drawn by pumps 24, 26 from a source and passed into a centrifuge 27 for removal of particulate material. The water is fed along pipe 28 and via influent pipe 13 to flow chamber 12 having a number of stainless steel sensor cones or funnels 14 with ultrasonic transducers 23 associated therewith. The quality of the water at various locations is constantly monitored by unmanned field station having probes 17 inserted in the funnels 14 and by means of auxiliary equipment, e.g. analysis module 18, telemetry module 21 the data is transmitted to a central data-collecting station. The ultrasonic generator 22 supplies ultrasonic energy at intervals to each probe which removes foreign matter from probe 17 and funnel 14. In another embodiment the probes are all located in one funnel in which case they are all subjected simultaneously to the ultrasonic energy.
