Abstract

In order to culture biological cell cultures on the large scale under controlled conditions, a flat tube (22) composed of gas-permeable, liquid-impermeable material is wound spirally onto a rotatable spool body (88). The interior roughened surface (70) of the tube (22) serves for attachment of the cells. Spacer means (74) keep adjacent windings apart and permit access of gas to the outer surface (76) of the tube (22) over its entire length without, however, hindering the flow of the culture medium through the tube (22). In the cultivation system, the supply and return lines of a large number of tubes (22) are located in a common rotation loop. The latter has a plurality of sensors which control the composition of the gas atmosphere and the supply of fresh culture medium. <IMAGE>
