Abstract
1490098 Recovery of argon used in refining stainless steel N U RINALDI 20 Dec 1974 [28 Dec 1973 30 May 1974] 55116/74 Heading C7D In the argon-oxygen decarburization (AOD) of stainless steels in a converter, the off-gases, mainly CO and Ar, are removed from the converter mouth by suction whilst being protected from the atmosphere by a jacket of gas, preferably Ar, CO 2 , steam or a mixture of these, such that the Ar can be subsequently separated from the other gases. The off-gases are sucked through duct 4 in which the jacket of gas is introduced through radial nozzles 6'; the stream then being treated in Venturi scrubber 7 and exhauster 8 prior to compression at 10. The compressed gas has CO 2 removed in absorber 11 (using, e.g. hot potassium carbonates), has CO removed in installation 12 and the remaining Ar is stored in tank 14 and recycled to the converter 1. The installation 12 is either (a) a CO- absorber, using a cuprammonium solution (e.g. the sulphate) after which the stripped gas is scrubbed at 13 to remove NH 3 ; or (b) a lowtemperature fractionation column wherein Ar can be separated from the other gases by virtue of its greater density (in which case the scrubber 13 is not used). The CO 2 removed at 11 can be recycled to form the jacket gas. In further modifications the jacket of gas can be surrounded by a second jacket, e.g. of N 2 ; the absorber 11 is dispensed with and both CO and CO 2 are removed by the cuprammonium solution; and the absorber 11 may be replaced by molecular sieves.
