Abstract

1488361 Seaming CLARKE CHAPMAN Ltd 20 Feb 1975 [11 May 1974] 20934/74 Heading B5K [Also in Division B3] In a method of friction welding, relative rubbing movement is caused between two outer workpieces and an intermediate workpiece by supplying a load to the workpieces along a line, parallel to which the intermediate workpiece is movable but parallel to which only one of the outer workpieces is movable. An embodiment of an apparatus for welding tubular end components to a hollow axle banjo component comprises a fixed head 12, at one end of a base 14, having a chuck 18 rotatable by a motor 22, and slidable on the other end of the base, a head 10 having a chuck 16 driven by a motor 20. An hydraulic ram 32 is pivotally mounted to the base at 34 and its piston-rod 38 is pivotally connected at 40 to the head 10. A carriage 50 slidable on the base carries a boss 52 and clamps 54, 56, and a rod 60 having a stop 64 on the side remote from the head 10, extending from the head 10 passes through a bracket 62 on the carriage. In operation the outer workpieces are held in the chucks 16, 18 and the banjo is clamped on the carriage 50, the chucks are rotated and the head 10 is advanced towards the head 12. The workpiece in the chuck 16 engages the banjo and moves it into contact with the workpiece in the chuck 18 and friction welding of the pieces occurs, an increased load being supplied for forging. Retraction of the head 10 causes retraction of the carriage 50 by engagement of the stop 64 with the bracket 62. The heads may impart orbital, reciprocatory or other motion to the parts, one or each head may support more than one workpiece and the workpieces may be of the same metal or synthetic plastics materials.
