Abstract

1488012 Measuring fluid flow-rate electrically HAWKER SIDDELEY DYNAMICS ENG Ltd 18 Sept 1975 [20 June 1974] 27397/74 Heading GIN The direction of fluid-flow in a pipe 1 Fig. 2 is determined by comparing the temperatures of two bodies 3, 5 located equidistantly from a heated body 4: the rate of flow is determined by comparing the temperatures of the heated body 4 and of the upstream body 3 or 5. The bodies 3, 4, 5 comprise metallic rings on a plastics cylinder 2 supported by a pillar 10. Each ring is associated with a thermistor 6, 7 or 8 respectively, and the centre ring 4 is heated by an element 9. Thermistors 6, 8 form adjacent arms of a bridge network whose imbalance is amplified at 16, Fig. 3, to operate a relay 17 which either closes switch 18 and lights lamp 20, for fluid-flow from left to right, or closes switch 19 and lights lamp 21, for flow in the opposite direction. The appropriate upstream thermistor 6 or 8 is thus connected in a second bridge network with thermistor 7 and their resistance difference produces an imbalance which is amplified at 22, linearized at 24 and shown at 23 as indicative of mass fluid flow-rate. Alternatively the imbalance signal may be used to control the heating current to maintain a constant temperature difference. The rings 3, 4, 5 may alternatively be inside the cylinder 2 or on the surface of the pipe 1.
