Abstract

1487682 Towels; cleaning cloths PROCTER & GAMBLE CO 16 Jan 1975 [29 March 1974] 1959/75 Headings A4F and A4V [Also in Divisions A5 A6 B4 and B5] An absorbent structure, Fig. 2, for use as hand towels, dish towels, bed-pads, surgical dressings or diapers comprises a flexible substrate sheet 10, 11 having formed therein an arrangement of protuberances 13, each comprising a closed hollow cell extending on one surface of said substrate sheet, and hydrophilic absorbent material 14 disposed in the interstices between protuberances, whereby in use the protuberances prevent the absorbent material from being squashed by applied pressure thereby to prevent release of fluid by the structure or a reduction in the absorbent capacity thereof. The substrate sheet is a two-ply laminate comprising a backing member 10 and a protuberance forming member 11, the closed cells being formed between members 10 and 11. A second embodiment, Fig.3, (not shown), comprises a structure similar to that of Fig. 2, having a second protuberance forming member and further absorbent material 14 on the other surface of the backing member 10, the protuberances on each surface being relatively offset. A third embodiment, Fig. 4, similar to that of (Fig. 3) has the protuberances 13 on each surface aligned, and the backing member 10 is omitted. In a further embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown), the protuberances are joined together by strands to increase the lateral stability of the structure. The protuberances may be of cylindrical, hourglass, or mushroom shape and may be arranged in rectangular, square, triangular or random patterns on the substrate. The protuberances may also be in the form of ribs extending the length of the structure. The protuberances may be underinflated to prevent a knobbly feel and may be filled with gases, liquids, foams, gels, fibres or mixtures thereof. The substrate sheet may be made of polyurethane, polyethylene, or ionomer, and the absorbent material may be made of a variety of artificial or natural materials or a mixture thereof.
