Abstract

1487311 Reciprocating piston compressors HARDIE-TYNES Mfg CO 8 Oct 1974 43566/74 Heading F1N [Also in Division F2] The pistons 15, 33, 52, 56 of a reciprocating compressor are provided with piston rings 26, 35, -, 64 of self-lubricating plastics material and reciprocate in cylinder liners 17, 34, - , 63 of a graphite composition. Each piston has a coaxial cross-head 14, 33, 48, 56 slidable in a respective plastics liner of a cross-head guide carried by an open crank-case 2. The four radially arranged cylinders are connected by air or water cooled tubing (not shown) to form a four-stage compressor. Each cross-head is reciprocated by a connecting rod 39 journalled at-one end on a respective crank-pin 42 by a ball bearing 40 and at its other end on the cross-head by a needle bearing 41, the bearings 40, 41 each being provided with sealed in lubrication. Each piston may be integral with its cross-head or connected thereto by a flange on the piston received in a T-shaped slot in the crosshead. The plastics material of the piston rings is also used for the cross-head liners and for guiding bushes 31, 55 of the delivery valves 29, 54. Preferred plastics are p.t.f.e., polytrifluoroethylene, polycarbonate, polysulfone, polyimide and polybenzamidazole.
