Abstract

1487002 Two-stage blow moulding UNILEVER Ltd 7 Jan 1975 [9 Jan 1974] 660/75 Heading B5A [Also in Division B8] Biaxially oriented containers are made by injection moulding a thermoplastics preform about a mandrel 2 in a mould 5, cooling the preform and removing it on the mandrel from the injection mould, reheating the preform, e.g. in a conditioning "mould" 11 and moving it on the mandrel into an intermediate blow mould 14, partly blowing the preform at the thermoplastic temperature and cooling the partly blown preform in the intermediate mould to the thermoelastic temperature, blowing the partly blown preform to its final shape in a blow mould 17 while still at this temperature, and cooling the blown container before removal. Blowing mandrels 2 with cooling passages 3 are rotated between working stations by a carrier 1. The conditioning "mould" 11 does not touch the preform but heats it by radiation. Heating and cooling devices 12, 13 produce special temperature distributions for preforms which have varying wall thicknesses to produce containers with varying boss section Figs. 5-10 (not shown). The intermediate blow mould 14 has similar heating and cooling devices 15, 16, and the injection and blow moulds 5, 17 have cooling devices 10, 18. The blown container is removed by a stripper 19 or by radial movement of the blow mould 17 before opening. P.V.C. or crystalline polymers may be moulded.
