Abstract
1486963 Lamps; wick burners SHELTON PROPERTIES Ltd 18 Feb 1976 [26 Feb 1975] 8070/75 Headings F4R and F4T A liquid fuel burning lamp comprises a wick burner surrounded by a lantern element 22, both mounted on a fuel reservoir 10, an inner transparent tube 54 forming a combustion gas outlet leading to an outlet tube 52 passing through a top aperture 44 in the lantern element 22 and a top cap structure providing an air inlet through the aperture 44 to the annular space around the outside of the tubes 52 and 54 and a combustion gas outlet from the outlet tube 52. The cap structure comprises a cap 51 integral with the outlet tube 52 and a cap 57 on top of the outlet tube and secured thereto by handle 66. The tube 54, which may be of glass, is supported by springs 55 on a frusto-conical member 53 secured to the outlet tube 52. Air enters the lamp through the gap between the cap 51 and the lantern element 22, passes down the annular space between the lantern element and the tubes 52, 54 and enters combustion chamber 35 through apertures 36. Combustion gases leave the chamber 35 through an upper aperture 38 and pass through the tubes 54, 52 and apertures 56 in the tube 52 to leave the lamp beneath cylindrical wall 63 of the cap 57 and through apertures 62 in the cap. The lens element 22, which may be of polycarbonate or glass and may be coloured, is formed with a central convex belt 45 and prismatic ribs 46, 47 to direct most of the light horizontally, and a large number of internal vertical ribs 48. Lugs 21 on the lantern element engage a burner support, formed by plates 14, 15, which also has a threaded connection to the reservoir 10. The burner may be of the kind specified in patent Specification 1,486,962. If periodic flashing is desired holes 29 are provided in wick tube 24 so that periodically an explosive mixture accumulates in the combustion chamber and is ignited by a small flame at the top of the wick 25.
