1486594 Making electrical connections BUNKER RAMO CORP 23 Sept 1974 [19 Oct 1973] 41332/74 Heading B3A A tool for mounting an insulated electrical conductor into a connector 10 which is elongated and formed with an insulation piercing notch or contacts 26, 28 and 30, 32, comprises conductor engaging means, e.g. an insertion blade 72, mounted on tool support means, the blade being dimensioned for insertion into the upper portion of the connector, and including an edge portion 74 for engaging the conductor and projections 76, 78 extending from the edge portion and spaced for insertion into the lower portion of the connector on either side of a pair of insulation piercing contacts. The end of an insulated conductor 60 is placed between tines 84, 86 of a guide 82, on the projections 76, 78 and in an aperture 96 in a plate-like member 92. The tool is lowered and a projection 94 on the member 92 bottoms in the connector, the member 92 remaining stationary while the insertion blade 72 continues to move downwardly, cutting off the end of the wire extending beyond the member 92. The projections 76, 78 force the conductor down into the connector while the piercing contacts 26, 28 and 30, 32 cut through the insulation to establish electrical contact. An edge portion 80 of the blade 72 forces the conductor between resilient portions 48, 50 so that it is gripped in a bore 46. As the tool is withdrawn a spring returns the plate 92 to its original setting. The tool may form part of a hand tool (70), Fig. 2 (not shown), or it may form part of a machine.
