Abstract

1485598 Curing epoxy resins DOW CHEMICAL CO 17 Feb 1976 06148/76 Heading C3B [Also in Division C2] The reaction of polyepoxides with a phenolic compound, a carboxylic acid anhydride or a mixture thereof is catalysed by a compound in which each R represents a C 1-20 aliphatic hydrocarbyl radical, R<SP>1</SP> is H or a C 1-20 hydrocarbyl radical, R<SP>11</SP> is H, C 1-20 alkyl or C 1-20 alkoxycarbonyl and n = 0-20. Preferred catalysts are tri-n-butyl(2-carboxymethyl)phosphonium hydroxide inner salt and the corresponding (2-carboxyethyl) compound. The catalyst may be employed at 0À001-10% by wt. of reactants. Reaction may take place at 50-225‹ C. In an example a liquid diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A is reacted with hexahydrophthalic anhydride in the presence of trin - butyl(2 - carboxyethyl) - phosphonium hydroxide inner salt.
