Abstract
1484974 Purifying waste water by electroflotation SWIFT & CO 13 Jan 1975 [1 Feb 1974] 1377/75 Heading C1C Water containing suspended and/or dissolved impurities is purified by forming microbubbles within the liquid by passing an electric current therethrough, the microbubbles assisting in the flotation of coagulated particles of the suspended and/or dissolved impurities, wherein the electric current density, i.e. the calculated current per unit area of the bottom of the treatment tank covered by the electrodes, is decreased from a value causing high turbulence in the liquid and microbubbles are formed at one or more lower electrical current density values. The treatment is preferably carried out in a tank divided into a number of zones having electrodes and the water flows through the zones of decreasing electrical current density. The process is preferably applied to oil- and fat-containing effluents, e.g. from a meat-packing plant. The effluent is preferably pretreated with ferric chloride or sulphate or alum as coagulants and polyacrylamide flocculants.
