Abstract
In order to produce a carrier web which has been impregnated and coated with curable synthetic resins for surface coating of, for example, boards made from wood materials, a carrier web of paper is first impregnated with an aqueous solution of urea-formaldehyde precondensate, which may additionally contain melamine-formaldehyde precondensate, and is predried. In a second operation, the predried carrier web is coated with an aqueous dispersion of curable copolymer comprising a hard, brittle copolymer A and an elastomeric copolymer B, and is dried. The copolymer A comprises predominantly monomer units of styrene and/or alkyl methacrylate and contains glycidyl acrylate or methacrylate in copolymerised form. The copolymer B comprises predominantly monomer units of alkyl acrylate. Each of the copolymers A and B contains monomer units which contain a free or amidated carboxyl group or one which has been esterified to give hydroxyalkyl esters, or a carboxylic anhydride group. By means of the combination of amino resin precondensate and curable copolymer, tack-free webs with a long shelf life can be obtained which, on pressing under curing conditions, give haze-free, crack-resistant and stable surface coatings.
