Abstract

1483163 High cis polyalkenamers GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO 19 Nov 1975 47629/75 Heading C3P Polyalkenamers are prepared by polymerizing cyclooctene or 1,5-cyclooctadiene in the presence of a catalyst comprising (A) R 4-n SiY n where R is alkyl, alkenyl or aryl, Y is vinyl, alkoxy, aryloxy or aralkoxy and n is at least 2, (B) R m-n1 WX n1 where X is Cl or Br, R is alkoxy, aryloxy, haloalkoxy or alkaryloxy, m is 6 when X is Cl and 5 when X is Br, and n<SP>1</SP> is 3 to 6, and (C) AlR 1 R 2 R 3 where R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are alkyl, aralkyl or halogen. The polymerization may be effected in solution or bulk in the presence of molecular weight modifiers, e.g. octene-2. Examples describe the use of catalysts comprising (A) diphenyldivinyl silane, tetravinyl silane or diphenyl dimethoxysilane, (B) (CH 3 CH 2 O) 3 WCl 3 , (CF 3 CH 2 O) 3 WCl 3 or and (C) ethyl aluminium dichloride or diethyl aluminium chloride.
