Abstract

1483092 Strand winding method P P G INDUSTRIES INC 2 Aug 1974 [3 Aug 1973] 13037/77 Divided out of 1483091 Heading D1J A method for winding strand onto a packaging tube comprises placing the packaging tube onto a collet having a broken, non- smooth peripheral surface and rotatable by an internal motor, securing the strand to the packaging tube, rotating the collet and changing the broken peripheral surface to a surface which is essentially smooth while increasing the diameter of the collet a sufficient amount to stretch the packaging tube, winding strand onto the packaging tube and then returning the collet surface to a non-smooth state and removing the wound package from the collet. The packaging tube may be stretched from its original diameter to between 1 and 2.5 per cent. The collet may provide peripheral winding speeds of 10000 to 18000 feet per minute. A collet assembly described in this application is described and claimed in the parent Specification.
