Abstract
1482144 Oxidation of olefins IDEMITSU PETROCHEMICAL CO Ltd 9 Oct 1974 [13 Nov 1973] 43765/74 Heading C2C Aldehydes, ketones or carboxylic acids are obtained by oxidizing olefins, which process comprises passing a reaction gas comprising the olefin, oxygen and water vapour over a catalyst composed of an inert carrier carrying copper halide and palladium halide, where the ratio of the weight of palladium to copper is in the proportion of 0.02 to 0.10, and the oxidation reaction is carried out at a relative humidity of from 0.05 to 0.30 in the absence of added hydrogen halide. The reaction gas may be a mixture of ethylene, oxygen and water vapour, optionally in admixture with nitrogen, the partial pressure of the ethylene gas suitably being in the range 0.009-0.05 atm. and the partial pressure of the oxygen gas suitably being in the range 0.02-0.3 atm. The catalyst may be prepared by steeping a porous solid, e.g. silica gel, aluminium oxide, pumice stone and/or a high silica glass, in an aqueous solution of palladium halide and copper halide and subsequently drying said solid.
