Abstract
1481843 Leak-proof bottoms in cartonboard containers INTERNATIONAL PAPER CO 4 July 1974 [12 July 1973] 29647/74 Heading B8P A thermoplastics coated paperboard container blank having a lower portion of the type substantially as shown in Fig. 5 having side panels 16-19 and bottom closure panels 16a- 19a of which panels 16a and 18a are gusset forming panels is provided in which the bottom closure flap 19a is a tuck-in panel, at least the centre 81 of the transverse edge of which is positioned so that when the blank is erected the gusset points formed lie on the line of said transverse edge, and an additional thermoplastics film patch, e.g. of polyethylene, is bonded to at least one of the bottom closure flaps adjacent to the centre of the transverse edge thereof, and extends beyond the transverse edge of the gusset forming flaps (or of the continuation of a line lying along said edge); whereby when the blank is erected and heat sealed, the patch provides sealing of the centre portion of the transverse edge of the tuck-in flap 19a and of the gusset corners, thereby sealing channels in the bottom closure through which liquid in the container may escape. The transverse edge 81 of the tuck-in flap 19a may be provided by a notch as shown, or the flap may terminate at the dotted line 105 so that the whole width of the flap has the required length.
