Abstract

148,131. British Thomson - Houston Co., (Assignees of White, W. C.). June 3, 1918, [Convention date]. Vacuum tubes.-Oscillations are produced by a three-electrode thermionic valve having a resonant grid circuit, by arranging that the grid current varies inversely as the grid voltage over the operating range of negative grid potential. The oscillator may be employed as a heterodyne receiver. Fig. 1 shows the valve so applied, and Fig. 2 shows the grid current, grid voltage characteristic. The grid circuit of the valve comprises an inductance 5 and variable condenser 6 in series, and the grid is given a normal negative potential by a battery 7 connected through choke-coils 8, 9. The negative resistance of the grid-filament path over the range BC is explained by the fact that an increase of negative potential on the grid decreases the plate current and so reduces the ionization of the residual gas, thereby reducing the grid current. A high plate potential, say 375 volts, is required to secure the desired result.
