Abstract

1481167 Winding; mandrels IMPERIAL METAL INDUSTRIES (KYNOCH) Ltd 27 June 1974 [23 July 1973] 34905/73 Heading B8G [Also in Division B5] A mandrel for producing an article by winding comprises a support means in the form of a shaft 7 by which the mandrel can be mounted in a winding machine, and, mounted thereon, a flexible impermeable bag 13 which can be filled with particulate material, e.g. sand to conform to the shape of a mould cavity 2 and then evacuated to form a rigid mandrel having the desired shape. The bag may be filled by means of a funnel 16, the mould preferably being vibrated to assist compaction. After filling the funnel is removed and the bag closed by an annular bush 19. The bag is evacuated through the hollow interior of the shaft 7, which is provided with holes 11. After removal from the mould the mandrel may be used to form an article by winding strip or filamentary material thereon and fixing the turns of the material to one another. The mandrel may be removed by releasing the vacuum and removing the particulate material from the bag. The material wound may be glass, nylon, or carbon filaments which can be fixed to one another by a matrix resin.
