Abstract

1479972 Measuring bodies photo-electrically COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) LTD 19 Feb 1975 [22 Feb 1974] 8152/74 Heading G1A Particle sizing is performed by determining the amount of obscuration of a light beam directed to light detector means when a particle is caused to slide down an inclined shoot. Particle sizing apparatus comprises an inclined shoot, light detector means extending transverse to the longitudinal axis of the shoot, and a light source arranged to illuminate the detector means. An inclined shoot 1, Fig. 1, comprising a pair of mutually-perpendicular plane plates 2, 3, is provided with light sources 7 which may comprise tungsten strip lamps on rows of LEDs and are arranged to illuminate transverse rows of holes 4, 5 in the plated 2, 3, behind which are rows of photo-detectors 6, Fig. 2, at 10 mm spacing, connected to an analyzer 8. As a lump of coal 9 fed from a vibrator (not shown) slides down the shoot 1, the numbers of detectors 6 shadowed by the lump in two dimensions are measured by the analyzer 8 which provides a signal representing the round sieve size to display or sorting apparatus (not shown). Air jets may be provided to clear dust from the holes 4, 5. In a second embodiment, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) a source, 7, providing a collimated beam illuminates a scanning camera (11) along an axis intercepted by the objects as they fall away from the end of the shoot (1). This arrangement provides a measurement of dimensions in transverse and longitudinal directions. The plates of the shoot may be spaced apart to allow objects smaller than a predetermined size to fall out of the shoot.
